Utility trench dug through the hard AZ caliche - Thank God for backhoes!Although, if you look at the bottom of the picture, you can see the two new valve boxes and the electrical wire. It was an adventure when the backhoe cut through the conduit and our main water supply pipe. Glad I wasn't driving... :-)

Closeup of the stemwallNote the thickness of the footing; that wall isn't going anywhere! The soft dirt in many places prevented digging narrow straight-walled trenches, so we ended up using a lot more concrete.

But first, I have to shovel 12 yards of fill dirt into the chambers.I needed to bring the chamber floors up to the concrete level; unfortunately, the concrete guys built the forms a few inches higher than I wanted. That's OK; let's see; only 15 shovels per wheelbarrow load, 250 wheelbarrow loads, nah... I don't want to count all that...
